Writers of poetry, fiction and nonfiction are invited to experience the oxbow in person during 2018, then write about or from that experience, and send their submission with a photo or drawing of the place, flora and/or fauna that was the impetus for that work to Oxbow, Inc.

Please review the following guidelines:

Writing Contest Rules and Information

Theme:  The Oxbow—A Hidden World

Open to writers who have physically visited the oxbow wetlands between January 1 and September 14, 2018.

Deadline for submissions is September 14, 2018.

Submissions are divided into the following entry levels in each of three genres (Poetry, Non-Fiction and Fiction):

  • Fifth to Eighth Grade as of Fall 2018
  • Ninth to Twelfth Grade as of Fall 2018
  • Adult

There will be first, second and third place prizes awarded for each level. First place winners will also be honored with an invitation to present a public reading of their work. All winners will receive a copy of Birds of the Oxbow, written by David Styer, and will have the option for their winning entry and brief bio and photo to be listed on the WWG website. WordWrites Guild will be responsible for judging all entries. Those decisions will be final.

To enter, please follow the process below:

  • Take a photo or create a drawing for inspiration.  This will be submitted with your written piece.
  • Write a poem, a fictional story or a nonfiction piece about the Oxbow.

And don’t forget that our three-word prompt for the month is:

Me

You

Us

The word count is limited to 500, but you might want to really challenge yourself and go for 250 – or less!

This month can be the month when you finally take that chance and stop by a WordWrites Guild meeting.  Whether you are new to writing or a seasoned pro, you are welcome to share your love of words in a friendly, comfortable and enthusiastic setting.

This month’s prompt came to us from WWG member Pat H. (Thank you, Pat!). Have some fun and see what you can do with it in 500 words or fewer, and then attend one or both WWG meetings in March to find out where the following three words lead your fellow writers:

You

Me

Us

We’re looking forward to critiquing Susan T.’s current book-in-progress, sharing our prompt-inspired creations, and more! Be sure to mark your calendars for:

Thursday, March 8th in the Depot Room at the Lawrenceburg Public Library  6-8:00pm

Wednesday, March 28th in the meeting room at the Harrison Branch Library  6-8:00pm

No, we haven’t gone batty – on Wednesday, February 28th, we will gather in the meeting room of the Harrison Branch Library at 6:00pm.  Anyone interested in writing needn’t remain in a cave – instead all writers are invited to join fellow word aficionados for an evening of writing, critique, review, sharing and camaraderie.

Over the course of two hours, we will present respectful and encouraging critique of submitted work, and each writer will have an opportunity to share their current projects, writing challenges, and literary successes.

We will also read our always creative, often exciting, personal interpretations of this month’s prompt. Please be sure to use the following words in your piece, which is capped at 500 words:

Factitious – https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/factitious
Enhance – https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/enhance
Excruciating – https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/excruciating

We look forward to seeing you in Harrison this fourth Wednesday of the month – February 28th – and will be happy to answer any questions you might have. Simply email, text or leave a voice message, and we’ll get back to you promptly!

  1. Sign up for regular updates from WordWrites Guild so you never miss a writing prompt.

  2. In 500 words or less, write a short piece incorporating and/or inspired by the current prompt.

  3. Stop by the next WordWrites Guild meeting where you can share your creation and listen to fellow writers read their unique take on the prompt. While there, spend a couple of hours talking about composition, writing challenges, word origins, on-going projects, language, and upcoming writers’ events with a friendly group of word-lovers just like you!

And just to get those creative juices flowing – here is the latest prompt:

This time it wouldn’t be so easy to fool them …

Remember to limit your word count to 500 or fewer words, whether you produce a poem or pen a play. Although everyone is encouraged to share their writing with the group, we understand that not every writer is comfortable with jumping right in every time.  These prompts are for creative fun; they are an opportunity to stretch those fingers, click that keyboard, drag the pen across the paper – and see what happens.

We’re looking forward to seeing you on

Thursday, February 8th at the Lawrenceburg Public Library, in the Depot Room,

from 6:00-8:00pm!

Please note that during this meeting, we will critique submissions from members, share our writing, and discuss the important changes coming to WWG based upon the results of the recent Community Connections survey.

Thank You …

… for taking the time to participate in our recent survey, and for your interest in WordWrites Guild. Although the Community Connections survey has closed, we look forward to sharing ideas, suggestions and answering questions at upcoming WordWrites Guild meetings and events.

Your input matters, and already changes are underway to better meet the needs of area writers. Please plan to attend the next WWG meeting on February 8th in the Depot Room at Lawrenceburg Public Library from 6:00pm until 8:00pm to learn more.
