Sharpen the Pencil, Smooth the Paper

You are more than welcome to share your talents, questions, works-in-progress, or simply a love of words with fellow wordsmiths at this week’s WordWrites Guild meeting at 6:00pm at the Lawrenceburg Public Library. We will be reading our literary homework based upon the following assignment:

  • a former child star
  • the last day of school

You might be surprised, entertained; even moved, by the varied and personal writing that has been inspired by one set of prompts. It’s like recess for words!

Fun With Words!

We welcome May with quite an interesting assortment of words with which to create, compose, and craft. These disparate choices were made by blindly reagirls-1149935_1920ching into that shimmering universe of language – a vintage box of vocabulary cards! Oh, the joy of discovering an antediluvian word – just waiting to be released from the dust and silence of disuse.

Circumlocution

Lavish

Placid

Euphony

Baffled

Protuberance

As always, the word limit is 500 – and you can use your imagination as far as content, genre, etc. Of course you are welcome to play along at home, although you might have a better time joining your fellow word-geeks at the next WordWrites Guild meeting on Thursday, May 11 at the North Dearborn Library from 6:00-8:00. We are always happy to see new faces, to hear new voices – and to learn new things!

A New Season and A New Schedule

Change is in the air. We wrap it around our bare shoulders on chilly evenings, and we taste it when we bite into hard, cold, just-picked apples. We smell it in smoke-infused breezes and we see it along woodland paths of rust and gold.

This season of change is a fitting time for the WordWrites Guild to announce a new schedule and an invigorating event. As you may already know, tomorrow’s meeting marks the beginning of the new WWG meeting schedule:

Every SECOND Thursday of the month,

we will meet at North Dearborn Branch Library

Every FOURTH Thursday of the month,

we will meet at the Lawrenceburg Public Library

Our meeting times remain the same – from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM, and the premise of the group is unchanged; that is, to offer encouragement, support, and respectful critique to every writer who joins our friendly group to share a love of writing with fellow word-wranglers.

In keeping with our open-door approach to membership and our commitment to the community, WordWrites Guild is hosting the first annual Writers’ Festival on Thursday, October 27th in the Ewbank Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library.

This free event is open to the public from 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM, and offers everyone an opportunity to meet a variety of writers, illustrators, and more. Along with refreshments, there will be a Book Title Scavenger Hunt, a Community Build-a-Book, and terrific door prizes (including a special prize for anyone bringing in our display ad from the Beacon newspaper).

If you, or someone you know, would like to reserve a space (completely free of any fees or charges) to showcase and sell your published books, or if you might like to volunteer for the evening, please contact us – we’d love to hear from you.

Please be sure to join us for this inaugural event, and feel free to bring family and friends – it is only with your attendance that the evening will be a success. Thank you for your interest, your support and your enthusiasm.

Upcoming Changes

As we approach our six month anniversary, it is time to look forward to 2012.  Next year, we are planning to move from our once per month schedule on the third Thursday of each month to first and third Thursdays.  This will offer opportunities to critique more work from our authors, and to explore more discussion topics.

We will continue the once a month schedule through December (12/15/2011), and begin the new schedule on January 5, 2012 with a submission deadline of 12/30.

This change of schedule gives us an opportuinty to also discuss other aspects of our group.

  • Should we change our venue?
    • Alternating locations, e.g. North Dearborn and Lawrenceburg,  North Dearborn and Hidden Valley, etc?
    • Something totally different, e.g. a restaurant ?
  • Should we change the meeting times?
  • Suggest special discussion or presentation topics, e.g. dialog tags.
  • Suggest guest speakers.

Please offer your suggestions as a comment to this post.  We can continue the discussion at our December 15 meeting.  But we need to finalize any venue changes at that meeting so we can distribute new posters during the last half of the month.

Maybe someone should write that down...
