New Year, New Writing, New Friends

Welcome to 2018 – almost!

Although the holiday season continues to be joyfully celebrated, a lot of us are wiping our brows, happy to wave farewell to a busy, but oh so last year. Soon it will be time to pick up the pen, warm up the laptop and brew the coffee or stir the cocoa.

Underneath layers of knitted sweaters and mittened fingers lies a sense of anticipation for the coming new year; one that promises fresh stories, thrilling plots and characters ready to surprise us.

What are you planning to do with this exciting new year? Will you tackle that great epic poem at long last? Will you complete your Pulitzer-worthy novel? Will you commit to writing once a month, or each weekend, or just on every day ending with the letter y?

And will you join a writers’ group for steady support, warm camaraderie, and respectful critiques of your work?

For anyone living in the Greater Cincinnati area, WordWrites Guild is a good place to begin. Our ever-growing group is friendly, diverse and enthusiastic with plenty of fresh ideas for the coming year. Joining WWG is a great way to get off to a great start!

Charging into 2018, we’ll meet on January 11th – and then at least once every month throughout the year. Oh, but keep an ear to the ground and a sharp eye out for updates and news flashes since we will host additional get-togethers, events, and gatherings.

Please subscribe to this website so you’ll be sure to

receive updates and notifications about meetings, writing prompts and more.

Our first meeting of the new year will be held at Maverick’s Firewater Grill in Greendale, IN, on January 11th at 6:00pm. Please drop by to meet current members and enjoy some complimentary appetizers. Dinner will be on your own, but there is no need to dine – just share your writing resolutions/goals/hopes for the coming year, if you’d like.

Please note that we will be

critiquing and reviewing at least

two members’ submissions that evening.

And what would WWG be without our always popular 500 word (or less) take on our latest writing prompt? The photo below is this month’s prompt – it should light the imagination, brighten the mind, and warm up those creative juices:

We’ll look forward to seeing you on the 11th, but are always available to answer questions and provide information about the group. Feel free to contact us at, or by texting/leaving a voice message at 812-220-4594.

Happy Every Holiday and Happy ALMOST New Year!

I/O as a Writing Exercize

Stories are based upon decisions – the woman refused to marry for love, so settled for wealth; the safe-cracker rescued the child, and in doing so exposed his true identity;  the spider wrote fine things about the pig for his salvation, but not her own.

At every crossroad the writer faces choices, conflicts, opposites. This writing assignment was suggested by Marty, and is as simple or as complicated as you want it to be:

Begin with a binary situation, basically, the opposite of anything. It might be yes/no, war/peace, on/off, light/dark, life/death … anything that you consider to be two opposing somethings … and write a 512 word or less essay, poem, memoir, etc. incorporating that conflict.

Our nantipodal-39630_1280ext meeting will be especially exciting, enlightening, and entertaining as each of us shares our binary work. We hope you join us on Thursday, August 4th at the North Dearborn Branch Library at 6:00pm.

We always welcome members’ suggestions for writing prompts, guest speakers, and future events. Becoming a member is free and as easy as coming to a meeting. We welcome your input!
