Writing Contest and Meeting Updates

It is hard to believe that summer is almost over, and back-to-school time is right around the corner.  Why not squeeze in one last field trip by visiting the Oxbow. It is beautiful this time of year, and it is always changing.

As many of you know, Oxbow, Inc. and WordWrites Guild have joined forces to co-sponsor a regional writing contest open to all writers who have visited the Oxbow wetlands, located in part near Greendale, Indiana. For more information about this lovely, protected area, please visit http://www.oxbowinc.org. For more information about the contest itself, please click on the Writing Contest tab above. The deadline for the contest is September 14.

WordWrites Guild is open to writers of all kinds, from beginners, to accomplished writers, from those with an idea, to those working on something bigger. All are invited to become a member of WWG and share their writing successes and challenges, to submit work for review or critique, and/or to share their writing-prompt-inspired literary creations with the group.

There are those who never write in the margins of books, and then there are those who jot down everything–even their most precious secrets–in the white spaces of reading material. Search through your books (especially those purchased second hand) for marginalia. Let your imagination run wild as you consider the meaning of these jottings and imagine what the person who wrote them would be like. Use these ideas as a writing prompt for a story or poem or whatever comes to mind.  (For more ideas, visit http://www.atlasobscura.com/article/best-notes-written-in-books) Then visit WordWrites on August 9 to share your work.

At the next meeting, Liz Loche will discuss and help set up accounts for Social Media Marketing. If your are a writer who would like to “get your name out there”, this is the meeting for you.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 9th from 6:00-8:00, in the Depot Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library.

Little Free Library Program

WordWrites Guild invites you to cool off with fellow word aficionados on Thursday, July 12th at 6:00pm in the Depot Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library.

Rick and Jenna Baumgartner will share their knowledge of and experiences with Little Free Libraries. These Dearborn County residents have built and are the stewards of two Little Free Libraries. The evening will include firsthand information about this international effort to share the love of reading. There will be ample time for questions from attendees during this free event that is, of course, open to the public.

Following the Baumgartners’ presentation, WWG members will share their writing inspired by the following prompt, as explained by Susan T. –

We are to write a description of a place. It may be a travelogue, a story, solely a simple (or detailed) description, or whatever you like. As an added element, you may choose a different time period other than the present and make your piece a time travel offering. Keep your time and place a secret though. We will see if the group can guess where and when your story takes place.

In addition, WWG member Pat H. suggested we choose a topic or theme for each meeting that would include a round table discussion or offer an outright learning experience. The first topic is simply the development of, the use of, the challenges of – everything about, really – plot.

We look forward to seeing you at the

July 12th meeting of WordWrites Guild

from 6:00-8:00pm in the

Depot Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library.

Fourth Thursdays – Second Thursdays

meeting-1738945_1280WordWrites Guild has adopted the following schedule for the remainder of 2018. Please note the change of venue for the fourth Thursday of every month, beginning with our June 28th meeting.

We will meet in the Depot Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library on every SECOND Thursday.

We will meet in the Ewbank Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library on every FOURTH Thursday.

Both meetings begin at 6:00pm, although drop-ins are always welcome.

The writing prompt for the June 28th meeting is:

Choose a song and write a poem or fiction piece that the song might be about. Keep your song a secret because after reading your story, the group will try to guess which song you have chosen.

Please join us at the next meeting to share and listen to always entertaining and sometimes thought-provoking takes on the current writing prompt; discuss the ongoing WWG and Oxbow, Inc.’s writing contest, and review submitted works-in-progress.

Please be sure to mark your calendars and stop by the Ewbank Room at the Lawrenceburg Public Library on Thursday, June 28th at 6:00pm. We’ll be glad to see you!

… what you as a writer need from WordWrites Guild to better meet your expectations, to more easily fit into your busy life, and to help you achieve your goals as a writer.

In an effort to reach out to writers throughout Southeastern Indiana, Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati, we invite each of you to take part in the following brief survey. The information will be used only for scheduling meetings, for planning special events such as workshops, writing contests, and author visits, etc., and for selecting meeting locations.

We respect your privacy and assure you that your responses and contact information – should you choose to share that with us – will never be shared, sold, traded, rented, broadcast, etc. We are simply reaching out to interested writers as we tweak and improve WWG.

Thank you for taking the few minutes necessary to complete this survey.

If you have any difficulties accessing or completing the survey, please contact us at WordWritesGuild@gmail.com

Wow – November has arrived even before a lot of us were able to really enjoy October’s breezy evenings and crunchy leaves. Now it’s time for cider and gourds and pie!

On Thursday, November 9th, area writers are invited to drop by the North Dearborn Library to share their work for some friendly feedback, take part in respectful critiques of members’ projects, and read whatever they’ve come up with based upon the most recent writing prompt.

We are also asking members to stop by the front desk at the North Dearborn Branch Library to thank the manager, librarians, staff and volunteers for all that they have done for WWG and for the community. This second Thursday in November will be the last official WWG meeting at North Dearborn as we make a few changes to better serve writers throughout Southeastern Indiana, Northern Kentucky and the Greater Cincinnati region.

Please note that we will NOT meet on the fourth Thursday of November due to the holiday. If you haven’t already done so, you might want to subscribe to WordWrites Guild in order to stay up to date on all that will be going on in the coming year. We have some changes planned and a few events in the works that you won’t want to miss – including our annual Open House on December 14th in the Depot Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library – but more about that later.
