… refreshing reviews and cool conversation at the next WordWrites Guild meeting on July 26th in the Ewbank Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library from 6:00-8:00pm. The Thursday evening gathering of writers will include reviews and critiques of members’ submitted works-in-progress; updates on the ongoing writing contest that is co-sponsored by Oxbow, Inc. and WordWrites Guild. Willing participants will have the opportunity to read their latest creation inspired by this month’s writing prompt.

As always, every writer is encouraged to stop by any WordWrites Guild meeting. There is never a fee to join WWG – all that is required is an interest in and a willingness to write. No matter the genre or level of experience, members and visitors can enjoy a respectful and encouraging approach to reviewing and critiquing submissions, and an evening connecting with fellow writers.

We look forward to seeing familiar faces and to welcoming new wordsmiths!

Little Free Library Program

WordWrites Guild invites you to cool off with fellow word aficionados on Thursday, July 12th at 6:00pm in the Depot Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library.

Rick and Jenna Baumgartner will share their knowledge of and experiences with Little Free Libraries. These Dearborn County residents have built and are the stewards of two Little Free Libraries. The evening will include firsthand information about this international effort to share the love of reading. There will be ample time for questions from attendees during this free event that is, of course, open to the public.

Following the Baumgartners’ presentation, WWG members will share their writing inspired by the following prompt, as explained by Susan T. –

We are to write a description of a place. It may be a travelogue, a story, solely a simple (or detailed) description, or whatever you like. As an added element, you may choose a different time period other than the present and make your piece a time travel offering. Keep your time and place a secret though. We will see if the group can guess where and when your story takes place.

In addition, WWG member Pat H. suggested we choose a topic or theme for each meeting that would include a round table discussion or offer an outright learning experience. The first topic is simply the development of, the use of, the challenges of – everything about, really – plot.

We look forward to seeing you at the

July 12th meeting of WordWrites Guild

from 6:00-8:00pm in the

Depot Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library.

WordWrites Guild is delighted to welcome Jenna and Rick Baumgartner to our July 12th meeting in the Depot Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library. Jenna Baumgartner, Vice President of Hoosier Hills Literacy League, and her husband Rick have built and currently maintain two Little Free Libraries in Dearborn County, Indiana.

For anyone unfamiliar with the Little Free Library organization, it is a community based effort to promote literacy and share a love of reading. Favorite books are placed inside each small ‘library’ for anyone to chose and take with them, all for no cost. It is simply ‘Take a Book, Leave a Book”.

Please attend the July 12th WWG meeting to learn about Little Free Libraries, meet two local LFL stewards working to share books with the community, and ask questions about this highly-regarded, international organization.  The free program will begin at 6:00pm in the Depot Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library. Light refreshments will be served.

Writing, Sharing, Encouraging

Sharing your writing with others can be daunting. Many writers do far more than simply drop words onto paper. Most of us grapple with each word choice. We place commas and periods in just the right place so our characters’ voices come to life. We can often see every setting clearly and want so much to convey our vision, but understand the importance of leaving open space for the reader to fill in the details with their own ideas and memories and dreams.

When a painter of words, a sculptor of stories walks into a WordWrites Guild meeting, they can know that they are joining a creative community of writers who understands the effort – and the fun – of making up stories and following characters’ whims, and balancing silence with dialogue.

Stop by the next WWG gathering of local writers to talk about the ebbs and flows of writing, to ask questions and offer guidance, and to join the fun of reading aloud everyone’s take on this month’s writing prompt:

A person in a bee suit

Someone selling bananas

We’ll be looking forward to seeing you at the Harrison Branch Library on Thursday, May 24th at 6:00pm.
