The public is warmly invited to join WordWrites Guild on Thursday, December 13th in celebration of the winter holidays. Throughout the evening of seasonal music, delicious refreshments and good company, all writers are encouraged to share their own take on the current writing prompt, and/or read from their personal writing, works-in-progress, etc.

The evening begins at 6:30pm in the Depot Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library  We look forward to celebrating the season with you.

Our writing prompt for the evening is to add a feast to your writing. Do this any way you like: as a description, a memoir, a creative story, a poem, an essay, or whatever strikes your fancy.

So, come one, come all and join us for feasting and celebration of the holidays at WordWrites Guild Open House. As an added bonus, the winners of the Oxbow/WordWrites Guild writing contest will read their winning entries. Mark your calendars for December 13th and be part of the fun.

Only One Meeting This Month

As winter makes its chilly way toward the Midwest, writers don sweaters and steep tea in anticipation of shorter days and longer nights in which to write.

Calendars are already overflowing with traditional gatherings and new adventures, so WordWrites Guild will host only one meeting this month – on November 8th in the Depot Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library from 6:00-8:00pm.

Please note that our next gathering will be our annual Open House, held on Thursday, December 13th from 6:30-7:30pm in the Depot Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library.

All writers are welcome to escape the maelstrom and join this relaxing, encouraging and supportive group.

The last meeting brought an interesting discussion of clichés, which led to an interesting discussion of idioms, which led to an interesting discussion of Spoonerisms, which led to an interesting discussion of Malapropisms, which led to an interesting discussion of eggcorns, which led to an interesting discussion of . . . well, you get the idea. Good thing you do because these are the topics for the November meeting’s writing prompt. To help you along, here are definitions for each term. Use one or more examples of these in your writing this week.

A cliché is an expression that has become overused to the point of losing its original meaning or even to the point of being trite or irritating.  Examples: cold, hard cash or going bananas.

An idiom is a phrase or expression that means something different from what the words actually say. Example: using over his head for didn’t understand.

A Spoonerism is an accidental transposition of initial consonants in a pair or words. Example: well-boiled icicle instead of well-oiled bicycle.

A Malapropism is the unintentional misuse of a word by confusion with one that sounds similar. Example: a musical progeny for a musical prodigy.

An eggcorn is a word or phase that results from a mishearing or misinterpretation of another. Examples: for all intensive purposes instead of for all intents and purposes or doggie dog world for dog-eat-dog world.

Use whatever examples you find–or create–to complete your story, poem, or essay. Be ready to share at WordWrites Guild on November 8. Everyone is welcome!

Looking Forward to Seeing You!

Wow – November has arrived even before a lot of us were able to really enjoy October’s breezy evenings and crunchy leaves. Now it’s time for cider and gourds and pie!

On Thursday, November 9th, area writers are invited to drop by the North Dearborn Library to share their work for some friendly feedback, take part in respectful critiques of members’ projects, and read whatever they’ve come up with based upon the most recent writing prompt.

We are also asking members to stop by the front desk at the North Dearborn Branch Library to thank the manager, librarians, staff and volunteers for all that they have done for WWG and for the community. This second Thursday in November will be the last official WWG meeting at North Dearborn as we make a few changes to better serve writers throughout Southeastern Indiana, Northern Kentucky and the Greater Cincinnati region.

Please note that we will NOT meet on the fourth Thursday of November due to the holiday. If you haven’t already done so, you might want to subscribe to WordWrites Guild in order to stay up to date on all that will be going on in the coming year. We have some changes planned and a few events in the works that you won’t want to miss – including our annual Open House on December 14th in the Depot Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library – but more about that later.
