Looking Toward 2019!

The last twelve months have been especially busy for WordWrites Guild. Members learned about the business side of writing/self-employment during the informative and friendly presentation by Maureen Sheets, C.P.A. in May. Over the summer, Jenna Baumgartner, Vice President of Hoosier Hills Literacy League, and her husband Rick, both local builders and stewards of Little Free Libraries, stopped by to share their experiences with the Little Free Library program and talked with the group about ways to encourage and promote literacy. And this past autumn, WordWrites Guild and Oxbow, Inc. recognized and celebrated all of the talented writers who participated in the community writing contest with prizes and public readings.

Over the course of 2018, WWG members have had books, stories, and articles published, and many have made great progress with their works-in-progress.  Sadly, we’ve said goodbye to some members, but have been delighted to welcome new faces, as well.

When we meet again on January 10th in the Depot Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library at 6:00pm, we’ll continue to welcome all writers – of every genre and level of experience.  WordWrites Guild is a special place where writing matters and where writers are encouraged.

Have a safe and wonderful brand new year!

Holiday Festivities!

The public is warmly invited to join WordWrites Guild on Thursday, December 13th in celebration of the winter holidays. Throughout the evening of seasonal music, delicious refreshments and good company, all writers are encouraged to share their own take on the current writing prompt, and/or read from their personal writing, works-in-progress, etc.

The evening begins at 6:30pm in the Depot Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library  We look forward to celebrating the season with you.

Our writing prompt for the evening is to add a feast to your writing. Do this any way you like: as a description, a memoir, a creative story, a poem, an essay, or whatever strikes your fancy.

So, come one, come all and join us for feasting and celebration of the holidays at WordWrites Guild Open House. As an added bonus, the winners of the Oxbow/WordWrites Guild writing contest will read their winning entries. Mark your calendars for December 13th and be part of the fun.

October – Picture Perfect

Trees transform; their colors fluid, moving from green to red, yellow, and orange. Agile leaves dance through golden light as if nature has cast a magical spell upon them. Jewel-toned woods, winding trails, crisp air, and cozy sweaters – it’s time to pack your word bag and plan an outing to WordWrites Guild on October 11th from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the Depot Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library.

Our writing prompt for this meeting is shared by WWG member Laura P. who took this photograph while exploring the oxbow recently.  For anyone who has visited the oxbow, this picture of woodlands and fields, sky and space is familiar. For anyone who has yet to experience these protected wetlands, you might want to clear your calendar on the day of your visit. Once inside the tranquil world of the oxbow, you may find that one step leads to another, and that openness, that wildness and that beauty is difficult to leave.

It is especially fitting that our writing prompt is a glimpse of the oxbow. We are delighted to have received the entries for the writing contest and are currently reviewing them.

Within a few days we will be notifying winners and awarding prizes!

We sincerely thank everyone who participated in this contest. We hope that you delighted in your visits to the oxbow and had fun writing your essays, memoirs, poems, etc. as much as we enjoyed reading your submissions.

As always, we invite every word-geek, word-monger, word-crafter and word-aficionado to stop by the following WordWrites Guild meetings. We’d love to meet you!

2nd Thursday of October (10-11-2018) in the

Depot Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library from 6:00-8:00pm

4th Thursday of October (10-25-2018) in the

Ewbank Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library from 6:00-8:00pm

WordWrites Guild meetings are friendly, casual gatherings. Always open to the public, these get-togethers are free of charge and offer support, respect and encouragement to all writers. We understand that life is busy, so please note that writers are welcome to participate in meetings as their schedules allow.

Writing Contest Updates

Whew! The WordWrites Guild and Oxbow, Inc.’s 2018 Writing Contest has come to a close. Members of both organizations wish to thank every writer, educator, volunteer, media outlet – everyone throughout the region – who contributed to the success of this special event.

Please watch for news about the winning submissions and look for details about the upcoming special reception during which winning writers will be awarded their prizes.

We hope that every writer continues to find inspiration in the beauty of the oxbow, and we invite every participant to join the community of writers that comprise WordWrites Guild.

Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, September 27th, from 6:00- 8:00 at Maverick’s Firewater Grill, located at 535 E. Eads Parkway, in Greendale, Indiana 47025. We are always open to new members. Hope to see you then!

The discussion topic for the upcoming meeting will be “Dialogue”. The definition, according to playwright and screenwriter John Howard Lawson, is that “dramatic dialogue should always be a compression and extension of action.” Whether you agree or disagree, let this definition be your incentive to dabble in a dazzling dialogue discussion at WordWrites’ next meeting.

September 27th’s writing prompt is literally a roll of the dice. Nine cubes with a picture on each face revealed the following images:  Smiley Face, Lightning Bolt, Eye, Bridge, Magnifying Glass, Flower, Padlock, Shooting Star, and Clock. Imagine those images or words as they “roll” into your writing; then join WordWrites for a thoughtful (or perhaps hilarious) read-aloud.

Falling into Autumn

Please note that the next WordWrites Guild meeting will take place on Thursday, September 13th in the Depot Room of the Lawrenceburg Library at 6:00 p.m. The date was reported in error on the last post.

September is an unpredictable month – will it bring the first crisp hints of autumn with it? Or will every day make us wish for the relative cool of mid-July?

No matter the weather, this is the time to visit the Oxbow wetlands located near US50 in Hamilton County, Ohio and Dearborn County, Indiana for inspiration. The WWG and Oxbow, Inc. joint writing contest will close at 11:59pm on Friday, September 14th.

Per contest rules, every submission needs to include a picture of that special place within the oxbow lands that inspired you as a writer. To find a map of the oxbow, please visit Oxbow, Inc. , and for more information about the contest, please click on the tab at the top of this page.

Local writers are invited to join their fellow wordies at the next meeting of WordWrites Guild on Thursday, September 13th in the Depot Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library at 6:00pm. There is never a fee to join, and all writers are welcome regardless of age, genre, or experience.

Ever wonder how to make your characters tell who they are and what will come next in the story? Then get ready for a rousing roundtable discussion on dialogue–how to use it, improve it, punctuate it, and utilize it in your stories. Bring your ideas and hear those of others at the next WWG meeting.

We all know that from time to time, writers lose the ability to come up with new ideas or experience a creative slowdown. You might wail, “I can’t think of anything to write,” or “I’m just not creative enough for this topic.” Well, that’s Writer’s Block for you–and that’s the September 6th writing prompt. Put your Writer’s Block ideas on paper in whatever clever, factual, or technical writing form you’d like, and share them at WordWrites’ on September 6th.

One last note: WordWrites would like to celebrate the release of Pat Hanlon’s new book, Hooker’s Bridge, Civil War Saga available now at Amazon.com. Congratulations, Pat!

Fourth Thursdays – Second Thursdays

meeting-1738945_1280WordWrites Guild has adopted the following schedule for the remainder of 2018. Please note the change of venue for the fourth Thursday of every month, beginning with our June 28th meeting.

We will meet in the Depot Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library on every SECOND Thursday.

We will meet in the Ewbank Room of the Lawrenceburg Public Library on every FOURTH Thursday.

Both meetings begin at 6:00pm, although drop-ins are always welcome.

The writing prompt for the June 28th meeting is:

Choose a song and write a poem or fiction piece that the song might be about. Keep your song a secret because after reading your story, the group will try to guess which song you have chosen.

Please join us at the next meeting to share and listen to always entertaining and sometimes thought-provoking takes on the current writing prompt; discuss the ongoing WWG and Oxbow, Inc.’s writing contest, and review submitted works-in-progress.

Please be sure to mark your calendars and stop by the Ewbank Room at the Lawrenceburg Public Library on Thursday, June 28th at 6:00pm. We’ll be glad to see you!

Writing, Sharing, Encouraging

Sharing your writing with others can be daunting. Many writers do far more than simply drop words onto paper. Most of us grapple with each word choice. We place commas and periods in just the right place so our characters’ voices come to life. We can often see every setting clearly and want so much to convey our vision, but understand the importance of leaving open space for the reader to fill in the details with their own ideas and memories and dreams.

When a painter of words, a sculptor of stories walks into a WordWrites Guild meeting, they can know that they are joining a creative community of writers who understands the effort – and the fun – of making up stories and following characters’ whims, and balancing silence with dialogue.

Stop by the next WWG gathering of local writers to talk about the ebbs and flows of writing, to ask questions and offer guidance, and to join the fun of reading aloud everyone’s take on this month’s writing prompt:

A person in a bee suit

Someone selling bananas

We’ll be looking forward to seeing you at the Harrison Branch Library on Thursday, May 24th at 6:00pm.
